Using Annie Sloan Soft Dark Wax on Painted Upholstery

My previous post showed you how to paint and wax upholstery fabric….in it I used  Annie Sloan’s Soft Clear Wax.  Now I would like you to see how her Soft Dark Wax can appear on painted upholstery.  This is the painted piece (to learn how to paint it, read the previous post) :1-Burgundy Settee 003     When applying wax to large surfaces, using a good wax brush is very advantageous; your local Annie Sloan Stockist will carry several kinds for you to choose from.  The advantage is speed; the job will go much faster with a wax brush.

Here is the piece partially waxed so you can see the change happening:

1-Burgundy Settee 006     Work in sections; applying wax to the entire area, then removing with a cloth the extra wax that did not bind to the paint.  When the entire piece has been waxed, use clean cloths to remove the residual wax and buff it to a sheen.1-Burgundy Settee 009     You can see how much the wax darkened the original color.  The fabric was a floral tapestry, giving this beautiful texture that looks like tooled leather.1-Burgundy Settee 012

To find your local Chalk Paint® Stockist, go to Unfolded.com, choose Stockists, then put in your zip code and there will be a list for you.  Contact them with any questions and, of course, to purchase the product.

PAINT UPHOLSTERY with CHALK PAINT® by ANNIE SLOAN

I have many times found the perfect upholstered piece but the fabric was not what I wanted, and I‘m sure that many of you have encountered this dilemma. Or, you have a favorite piece but would like to bring it up to date, without the high cost of new upholstery.  Now, both problems can be solved using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

One of my customers found two huge wingback chairs and brought them to me for a new identity….they looked like this:1-Before-After Floral Chairs and store photos 001      These were lovely in their day, but needed updating. The customer chose Old White for the fabric and Old Ochre for the legs.  Keep in mind that the more contrast there is between the base color and the top color will determine how many coats of paint will be required.  1-WHITE WINGBACKS II 009      I decided to explore the local hardware store for a way to make painting all of that upholstery real estate go faster…..I discovered the painting mitt above.  It did make the job go so much faster because of the large mitt surface.  So, what you need is a paint tray, painting mitt, water, Chalk Paint® in the color of your choice, Annie Sloan’s Soft Clear Wax, and some shop cloths (using a proper wax brush will make the job go much faster, but you can apply it with a shop cloth).

Spritz your fabric with water just to lightly wet it.  Then, dilute your paint with water(approximately 30% water to 70% paint) and pour some into the paint tray.  Use your mitt to pick up some paint(don’t soak it) and apply to fabric, rubbing and spreading it around until you need to pick up more paint.  Don’t worry about good coverage on your first coat.  After covering the entire area, let the fabric dry(overnight if necessary).  This is what it looked like after one coat:1-Before-After Floral Chairs and store photos 057       Your second coat will cover much better.  If your two colors are close to each other, you will only need two coats.  These chairs covered in two coats:1-White Wingbacks, Spring at Home 006        The two wingbacks required more coats to cover such a dark fabric with white.  After you are satisfied with the coverage on your piece, lightly sand the fabric with a medium grit sanding block to soften it.  Chalk Paint® sands very easily, so it doesn’t take much sanding to do this.  Make sure you cover the floor beneath your piece to catch the paint dust.  Wipe the sanded dust off of your piece, paint the legs, and apply a coat of Annie Sloan’s Soft Clear Wax.  The sanding and waxing soften the paint and give it a slight sheen.  Ta da:1-WHITE WINGBACKS II 001       When considering your fabric, make sure it has a fairly short nap because sanding will remove the paint off of long fibers.  The texture of the fabric  will show underneath the paint, which is a plus.  This fabric was a floral and you can see that texture on these chairs:1-WHITE WINGBACKS II 004      For more examples of painted upholstery, follow the links to my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/atticdoorvintiqueshomedecor?pnref=lhc, and to my Pinterest page, https://www.pinterest.com/atticdoorvintiq/

ShadesGREEN…..has been my favorite color since childhood.  I remember finding it very difficult to find clothing in that color.  Now, you can get just about anything in many shades of green, or you can paint it the color of your choice.  In this era, people love color, and the brighter the better.

The collage below was continually pinned from my Pinterest site: http://www.pinterest.com/atticdoorvintiq/, showing that many others like Green, and inspiring me to make this tribute to my favorite color.collage

1-Autumn Shows 2013 036

When the sun comes up on a crisp October morning in Western Washington, those of us who love autumn and shopping are on the road to the local Barn Shows, which are popping up in numbers every year.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 026

The cool morning and splashes of brilliant colors make me glad to be alive on such a day.  I pretty much live at my store…….but this is one of the rare occasions that I actually close the store for the day and partake of these joys with a good friend.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 001

I have been wanting an old bicycle to paint and display on the sidewalk outside of my store, hmmmm………..

1-Autumn Shows 2013 003

I could place a large box or basket on the back of the bicycle and fill it with seasonal flora, such as these lovely rose hips (you can make tea with rose hips).

1-Autumn Shows 2013 004

Or, how about an old wagon to serve the same purpose.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 027

So many lovely things and so many new ideas can be found at these shows; and on to the next barn.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 033

This one has a garden delightfully decorated and open for strolling.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 031

What farm would be complete without a chicken coop.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 019

Great color combination.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 020

Several dealers were selling these vintage auto pieces and using them to make beds, benches, etc., etc.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 015

Speaking of benches; how about this one?

1-Autumn Shows 2013 005

Then we met Albert……we noticed him following us around the show.  If you look back to the photo with the wagon full of fall leaves, he’s in the upper left corner, trying to be inconspicuous!

1-Autumn Shows 2013 021

Another painted bicycle; hmmm……..

1-Autumn Shows 2013 022

Popular colors and patterns.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 024

Now this man is very creative with his craft.  Ray Evans of “Old Geezer” Art.

1-Autumn Shows 2013 025

They politely posed for me.

Finally, an impulse item I purchased:1-Autumn Shows 2013 028

These panicular style Hydrangeas say “Old Country Garden” to me……had to have them!  And, for the store:1-Store Pics, Nancy's Furniture 056

This little shabby table just sold today, but the creative striped and dotted pumpkins are awaiting you at Attic Door Vintiques.

HAPPY AUTUMN TO YOU ALL!

A Fly On The Workshop Wall

For those of you who have never taken a CHALK PAINT® Workshop, you are missing out on a wonderful experience.  I say that because Annie Sloan’s paints and waxes are very easy to work with; no talent or “knack” for painting is required.  Even a man can do it (just kidding guys, you know we love you)!

Donnie painting a mirror frame.

You simply register and arrive, ready to be amazed and delighted.
For the beginner workshop, you simply bring yourself in painting clothes (you may wear your tiara, if you so choose).

For the “Bring Your Own Piece” workshop, you bring a small item to paint.  I would like to share one of these workshops with you:

1-BringYourOwnPieceWorkshop 013

These lovely ladies are Janet, Nancy, and Diane.  They work together (and they even get along).  Nancy and her husband were in the store the other day and she admired a technique I had done on a coffee table (more on that later).  She and her friends have a “craft night” every Wednesday, so for this week, they registered for a workshop.  I told them to bring something they could carry into the store, and hoped that none of them could carry a piano!

1-BringYourOwnPieceWorkshop 001

This vintage sewing cabinet belonged to Nancy’s grandmother and needed un update.  Chalk Paint® in Primer Red and Florence were chosen as well as Annie Sloan’s “Frottage” technique for the top.

1-BringYourOwnPieceWorkshop 003

Diane loves the cute little feet on this nightstand but it needed a facelift, so she chose Coco and Duck Egg Blue for her color scheme and a stencil for the top .

1-BringYourOwnPieceWorkshop 002

Janet wants to make this special for her six year old granddaughter (who is evidently a princess!).  She chose Old Violet and Old Ochre, with a stencil that befits her granddaughter’s station in life.

SEVERAL HOURS LATER (and much painting, chatter, and laughter):

A Transformation!

Now THIS is a piece fit for a princess!

                                               And last but not least:

1-BringYourOwnPieceWorkshop 012

Can you tell that Nancy is happy with her heirloom?
