Bright or Subdued? Which One are You?

Annie Sloan’s line of paint has 35 beautiful colors.  Some are mellow and others are bright.  In choosing a color for one of my bedroom furniture pieces, I decided on BARCELONA ORANGE.  The wall color is pale yellow and my drapes are a floral on a red background.  Orange is a great color to throw into the mix. This piece already looks orange, but if you look closely, it is badly stained wood with a thick, shiny top coat that yellowed with age.  It’s a great storage piece and takes little room, being only 13 inches deep. The first coat of Barcelona Orange was very orange.  Notice how the camera made the top look much lighter than the base; but they are the same color.I painted and waxed a sample first, which is something I recommend.  Then, you know what it will look like.VIOLA!  Two coats of paint and a layer of Annie Sloan’s Soft Dark Wax gave it a beautiful hand-painted and unique finish.  The dark wax subdued the color, gave it an aged look, and a bit of sheen.

THE 2017 JEWELRY BOX

Vintage to New is so easy to do with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan:

I found an old French Provincial jewelry box at a thrift store and decided that it would suit my needs at home.  It has 5 drawers and sits on cute little cabriole feet and that make it the perfect piece for the top of my antique chest of drawers.  Right now, all of my jewelry is on little antique plates, but they cover the entire top.  This will free surface space and look attractive at the same time. This is not the same jewelry box, but the colors are the same (I forgot to take the “before” photo).

I chose Annie Sloan’s “Burgundy” color because I have burgundy reds and greens in my bedroom. It needed the richness that Annie Sloan’s Dark (brown) Wax would give it.  I could also have used her Black Wax to deepen the color. The drawer knobs and feet are made of brass and needed freshening, so I applied Gold Gilding Cream to them using my finger.I love it, and it was sooooo easy to do.  YOU can do it too!

BLACK WAX – One of Two New Wax Colors by Annie Sloan

waxes-black3     Have you tried Annie Sloan’s new Black Wax yet?  I hadn’t, so when I recently purchased a French style desk, I decided to try it.  I wanted a French blue color, so I mixed one using Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg Blue, Old Ochre, and French Linen.  Here it is with 2 coats of paint on it.  Notice how powdery soft it looks, which is the reason Annie Sloan called it Chalk Paint®.1-2016-duck-egg-desk-011     I painted the hardware as well, but I wanted to give it some definition, so I thought of adding another color and gilding cream.  I painted a sample board, then added Old White and gold gilding cream to the design, then waxed with clear and black wax:1-2016-duck-egg-desk-010     Liking the result, I proceeded with the waxing.  Black wax by itself is, well, very black.  So, I decided to make my own shade by using clear wax and mixing in small amounts of the black until I liked the shade.  Annie Sloan’s waxes can be freely mixed.  Practice on molding pieces until you get the look you want.  And viola:1-2016-duck-egg-desk-030  Here’s another photo:1-2016-duck-egg-desk-021

You can see how the black wax settled into the crevices and made the pattern stand out.  1-2016-duck-egg-desk-026     The hardware has a coat of the blue, a layer of Old White dry brushed over it, and the black wax in the crevices.  After waxing the entire piece, I applied a layer of gold gilding wax with my finger, just hitting the highlights on top of the pattern.  The metallic creams should be applied last.1-2016-duck-egg-desk-020     The shade of black wax I mixed subtly aged the blue color.1-2016-duck-egg-desk-014

YOU ASKED FOR IT, AND Annie Sloan MADE IT FOR YOU:1-IMG_0887-001

We already had the clear and dark waxes; now we have white and black wax.  I chose this pretty shelf to showcase all four.  The shelf is plastic and badly needed an update:IMG_0882     I chose Annie Sloan’s Louis Blue, painted the entire shelf, making sure to get paint into all of the nooks and crannies.  Then I applied all four colors of wax to show how different your piece can look with each wax color:1-IMG_0892-001 1-IMG_0893     WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE?

LAYERED CHALK PAINT® FINISH

There are many ways to create the distressed look on furniture, etc.; one of them being Paint Layering.  This is the finished piece, layered with three Annie Sloan colors:1-IMG_0700     The vintage frame was given a base coat of Annie Sloan’s “Graphite,” then allowed to dry. 1-IMG_0691     Then, an uneven layer of “Primer Red” was applied with the dry brush method; wherein you load your brush with paint, then brush most of it off on the side of the can.  Carefully apply the second color so as not to cover all of the “Graphite.” After this layer dried, the third color, “Old Ochre,” was applied by the dry brush method; being careful not to cover all of the previous two colors:1-IMG_0693     A project like this one can be fun to do because you can play with the colors; applying a little or a lot, until you are happy with the result. If you apply too much of one color, let it dry, then cover some of it over again:1-IMG_06941-IMG_0696     More of the red was applied to certain sections of the piece, as can be seen above and below:1-IMG_0697      After drying, “Old Ochre” was used again to tone down and feather the “Primer Red”.1-IMG_0699     When you are happy with the result, wax the piece using Annie Sloan’s Soft Wax in clear or dark.  The clear wax won’t change the colors on the frame.  The dark wax will deepen them as can be seen on the horse-drawn chariot below:1-IMG_0700     The only thing left to do is enjoy your handiwork and tell your admiring friends how easy it was to do using Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax by Annie Sloan.
